Summer Slices

Background

This is another kit purchased at Village Quilts in Lethbridge (last year, June 2013, I believe). My sister pointed it out because she loved the bright colours. And, once I saw it so did I.

But once Barbara and I looked closely at the pattern in early 2014 we realized that neither of us was really keen on the titled "slices" — that is, the watermelon slices used in the outside border. So, Barbara started on the center, while we looked at alternatives for the border.

There were a number of options considered, but in the end we went with Friendship Stars using the "snowball" from the main part of the quilt in the centre of each star. We think it came out very nicely. Though our version does make the quilt smaller than the original's 60 x 60 inches.

Barbara started pieceing the centre February 15, 2014. As it took us a while to decide on the border, it wasn't finished until May 29th. Barbara took it to Catherine, A Quilted Garden, to find a backing fabric and to get it professionally quilted. She then brought it home to do the binding — finishing on June 10, 2014.

But, we may need to rename it, as "Summer Slices" no longer seems appropriate. Perhaps "Sharing Summer with Friends", "Summer's Stars", or somesuch.

The white background may be a little hard to keep clean, but the quilt really is a lap quilt. Probably just perfect for covering ones legs on a cool evening in the summer.

We gave the quilt to my sister Kristine when I was back in Lethbridge for my annual visit. She loved it. We even took it in to show Janet at Village Quilts. Where I, of course, bought a new kit or three.
