Subject: 2013-14 Proposed League Organization

Surveys

The two surveys conducted this past spring did provide some useful informtion.

  • Players made it very clear that competitive play is the cornerstone of a successful and satisfying league experience for the majority players.
  • The current scoring methodology was confirmed as being suitable.
  • Results regarding scheduling were less convincing; however, there is enough guidance to make a proposed league calendar with reasonable confidence.

Proposal

Consequently, we are proposing the following for the 2013-14 season:

  • Divisions will continue to be made up of 2 pair teams.
  • Teams will be assigned to divisions ensuring the divisions are as competitive as possible (primarily based on last season's results).
  • A season start of September 25, 2013, Christmas break will start after the matches on December 11, and it will begin again in the New Year on January 8, 2014.
  • Season will end mid April 2014.

We have assumed that all clubs will be fielding teams comparable to last season. The plan being put forward we believe is the best way to support and shape a competitive league.

Though all squash calendar events have not been finalized, a league calendar is presented for your consideration.

Divisional Make-up

Based on the teams and results from last season, we see the divisions as follows.

Division 1

  • EVE Kerluke (126 pts Div 1 last season)
  • VLT BMac (125 pts Div 1 last season)
  • HOL KJ (101 pts Div 1 last season)
  • VRC Jinks (97 pts Div 1 last season)

Based on proposed schedule, they will play 18 matches each during the season.

Division 2

  • VRC Pacey (65 pts Div 1 last season)
  • VLT Gray (48 pts Div 1 last season)
  • EVE Sibley (41 pts Div 1 last season)
  • HOL James (109 pts Div 2 last season)
  • VRC Mottus (99 pts Div 2 last season)
  • Bye

Based on proposed schedule, they will play 16 matches each during the season.

Division 3

  • EVE Broman (91 pts Div 2 last season)
  • HOL Kaffka (90 pts Div 2 last season)
  • EVE Henwood (87 pts Div 2 last season)
  • EVE Gaffney (76 pts Div 2 last season)
  • VRC Maddison (68 pts Div 2 last season)
  • Bye

Based on proposed schedule, they will play 16 matches each during the season.

Division 4

  • VRC Maunder (54 pts Div 2 last season)
  • VRC Peterman (22 pts Div 2 last season)
  • need at least 2 more suitable teams

Based on the current team status, there will be no Division 4 this season.

That said, a 4th division could likely be accomodated in the schedule. We, however, believe it is up to clubs and players to recruit sufficient numbers to support at least four teams if a fourth division is to be included.

Action Required

Clubs should confirm their teams per the proposal for divisions 1, 2, and 3. A decision regarding viability of division 4 also needs to be made.

So please review the proposal for the coming season with last year's captains and players. And, let us know which teams (including probable player make-up with captain identified) your club will be fielding for the coming season.

Playoffs

We will canvas teams during the season to determine interest in playoffs following the end of regular season round robin play. That will include determining the format for the playoffs (e.g. inter or intra divisional).
